Video is an integral part of online teaching: from lectures to expert interviews, video is key to connecting with students located across the globe and offers many ways to deliver information. But while most faculty have extensive experience teaching in a classroom setting, translating the in-class experience to video can be challenging.

To help Duke faculty developing online courses get an idea of what video styles they can use and are best suited to different kinds of content, staff from the Office of Information Technology and the Center for Instructional Technology compiled a list of 12 video styles, each with an example video clip, an explanation of the benefits and challenges of the approach, a description of how the video was created, and the approximate production cost.

The video examples are part of the resources provided by ViTaL, an exploratory program of the Duke Digital Initiative (DDI) to empower faculty to create educational videos by providing access to equipment, self-service options, and opportunities for peer-support. Duke faculty interested in creating educational video can check out a video kit through ViTaL and learn to use them with documentation and training.
