Brian Hare, professor of evolutionary anthropology at Duke University, has long found ways to translate his research on dog cognition into accessible ways for dog lovers to better appreciate their canine companions. His first book, The Genius of Dogs, was a New York Times bestseller, and in 2013 he started Dognition, a website that gives paid access to interactive games and assessments that help users understand how their dogs think.

Now, dog lovers around the world can learn from Hare’s research in an open online course.

The course, “Dog Emotion and Cognition,” will introduce learners to evolutionary and cognitive theory and some of the latest discoveries about how dogs think and feel. Participants will even have the chance to try some of the cognitive games with their own dogs.

“People have been so excited to learn about our work at the Duke Canine Cognition Center locally that it just made sense to make a class that anyone could take. I have so many people contact us for help and advice that I hope this class helps answer that need,” said Hare.Dognition folders game

“Dog Emotion and Cognition” follows on the heels of a three-part TV series hosted by Hare called Is Your Dog a Genius? The series premiered May 15th on Nat Geo WILD and explored how individual dogs navigate the world and solve problems.

“Cognition means there are different types of intelligence that vary independently,” said Hare. “The class is all about how we have found problems that dogs are genius at solving and those at which they are not so genius. We even have a way for people to assess their own dog’s different strategies for solving problems. Anyone who loves dogs is going to love learning what science has to say about how dogs think (and how they don’t). “

“Dog Emotion and Cognition” is now open for enrollment, and individuals may sign up for the self-paced course through Coursera.
